A Gun For Everyone

When I think about the serious issue of gun control in the United States my mind can’t help but wander all the way back to the Wrench episode of Arrested Development. However, for the past several decades, the debate has been characterized by stalemate between debate on an individual’s right to firearms under the Constitution and the duty of government to prevent crime and maintain order. Repeated polling has found that a majority of Americans believe that they have a right to own a gun, while at the same time a majority also believes that there is a need for stricter enforcement of current laws.
Our friends from Online Schools have compiled a lot of information on the topic, all presented in their already familiar graphically appealing format. Where do you land on the gun control issue?

“Repeated polling has found that a majority of Americans believe that they have a right to own a gun”
Cuz we do
The source URL’s listed are not sufficiently legible. In effect, no sources were given for these claims.
AMERICAA! FUCK YEEAAAH.
I think we’ve got the right idea.

3 per 100,000 people die each year from guns.
Significantly better than the 14 / 100,000 in the Land of the Free (or dead)

Looks a little lop sided of a debate. I guess that happens when you sight sources that are pro gun control.
Try this one out it, sources places like the Center for Disease Control, U.S Justice Dept., National Center for Health Statistics. you know unbiased fact type places. I know they are not Wikipedia but they’ll do.

Everyone should be educated and own a firearm. Be a responsible parent; Teach your children to be responsible. If everyone owned a gun I’m sure muggers wouldn’t be as keen to rob if there’s a huge chance you’re packing heat.
It was last Thanksgiving and my uncle’s farm hand made all the children a bonfire made of old wood around the farm and pieces of broken furniture. He starts by pouring gas on this pile of trash about 7 feet high and 13 across, and as it just turns dark he disappears for a minute to the farm shed with something strapped on his back. Then all of a sudden he starts spraying fire from a damn flame thrower to start the bonfire. Me and my cousins are thinking “Omfg is that a flame thrower?” Later we roasted marshmallows.
AMERICA FUCK YEAH!!!!!!
The “75 children a day are killed by firearms” is highly misleading. That number includes anyone under 21, including active servicemen and criminals shot by police or in self defense or during crimes, like teen gangbangers. If a 13 year old kills someone, they’re tried as an adult for murder, they’re no longer a child.
Yes miniguns are legal, but that price is 15 years out of date. There are 8 miniguns available to civilians after an intensive background check, the same background check done for anyone who wants to buy a machinegun.
Before machineguns were regulated, violent crimes involving machineguns mostly involved criminals killing other criminals. Law abiding citizens didn’t commit crimes using them. Since 1934, three registered machineguns have been used in crimes. Two of the machineguns were used by active duty police officers to commit crimes.
guns dont kill people, rappas do, i saw it on a documentary on bbc 2
Everyone should own a gun. And beyond that, everyone should know how to USE a gun. Owning a gun and knowing how to use a gun are two different things. The saying “If guns are illegal, only criminals will have guns” is a very true statement. Guns will not go away, ever.
Think of it this way: If you are bigger than someone your odds or prevailing are greater than if they are bigger than you. If you have a gun and you know the other person does not, odds are in your favor of prevailing. If you have a gun, and the other person has a gun, the odds are closer to even.
Gun use and safety should be taught to everyone so they are not a mystery to people. The reason most accidental shootings occur is because they were misused.
These stats are totally false, 9 children die every day from a gunshot?! Really. Who’s believing that?
nice way to pump up hysteria with statistics largely from the Planet of Duh.
Fun with math, the same statistics presented without the hysteria filter:
– 0.3% of Americans carry a gun at some point of their day on any given day.
– A combined worldwide military + police force of ~300+ million possess ~250 million guns (military grade), the 6.7 billion civilians own ~650 million (very mixed of all types).
– 3.154 million guns of all types are manufactured annually in the U.S. for all purposes – including those exported.
– China and India, with a combined population of ~2.5 billion people, make the top 5 list of countries with the most civilian guns. Oh double-duh. (Side note: Go Team America! We’re #1!)
– How many children are killed or crippled by cars each day? By hot water?
– 13% of shootings annually are homicides (actual deaths?). 87% of shootings are “other.” Police shootings are ~70% of all shootings annually? How many of the 100,000 are deaths? Even if all, out of 305 million people (or more) … 0.0003% of the population. What’s the percentage for cars?
– Violent crime goes up when gun ownership goes down? This is bad how …? More crime with fists, knives, lead pipes & broken bottles is better than less crime involving guns? WTF — you present this as a GOOD thing??
etc.
Chart is unsourced and does not pass critical logic & analysis smell test. No chance to look up the “sources” and determine their credibility.
FAIL.

“Of all Civilian weapons, only 12% are believed to be registered”
Really? How do you get that number? I live in a jurisdiction that does not require firearm registration. So how do you account for that in your statistics?
Legal Mini-gun? Sure, if you already have a Federal Firearms License. Without that, good luck.
How many children are injured on bicycles? How many die? How many are Permanently injured?
Your facts are vague, misleading and frankly, insulting.
The ‘Stand Your Ground’ law should be universal. Someone breaks into your home you should have the right to defend yourself and your property.
@Fred
I didn’t click your australian link. Why? Because I’m australian and quite frankly – this country is shit tier.
If foreign invaders (ie china) get sick of paying for iron ore, I have nothing to defend myself or my family with. The Federal Govt. handed my dead arse to me on cold stainless steel.
You go America!!!! Your country would be the hardest to invade because everyone has a gun hence every citizen is a soldier.
hahaha, Florida allows you to shoot people even if they’re not going to shoot you. Way to go, Florida, fuck those girl scouts up!
Also, the military aren’t a big deal cause they have more guns. they’re a big deal cause they have guns, bigger guns, rocket launchers, missile launchers, aircraft carriers, humvees, armored personnel carriers, attack helicopters and of course the great big 18-inch cock of modern warfare, the fighter jet (with unmanned versions ‘case you don’t wanna risk that one guy getting taken out). Not to mention experimental development of technology that will probably yield their own iron man suit within the next decade. Unless, of course, they already have one. So these 600 million gun toting civilians have to ask themselves, ‘are they feeling lucky’?
Oh and what the fuck, I thought it was illegal to own anything stronger than a hackeysack in China!
“Law abiding citizens didn’t commit crimes using them”
Here, fixed it for ya….
“Law abiding citizens didn’t commit crimes”
For the people who think everyone owning a firearm will somehow deter crime, where do you live that crime is more prevalent than the rest of human interactions ?
I think I’d have probably witnessed 100 fights for every street crime I’ve seen. So that might be 1 mugging avoided for how many people carrying a gun who aren’t happy losing a fist fight ?
“I’m australian … If foreign invaders (ie china) get sick of paying for iron ore, I have nothing to defend myself or my family with.”
Simon means ‘defend them from the Chinese army’.
Pal, get a shooters licence and buy yourself 2 legal guns. Nobody is stopping you doing that except you.
Meanwhile, China’s one-child policy and gender bias means they have several dozen million surplus military-age, military trained, dispensible males with no parents or siblings.
If you actually think this is a possibility, you should really be crying about the world not producing enough ammunition to allow you to defend your family from that.
In America, 100,000 people are shot each year. 12,791 are homicides, 16,833 are people committing suicide, 642 are accidental shootings. The remaining 69,734 are… what? Attempted homicides? Self-defense? Mythbusters dummies? It seems kind of crazy that they don’t mention what activities comprise the remaining two-thirds of people getting shot.
